The object is a crucifix or a table altar. The object has a wooden frame that has been decorated with ivory and amber.

It was decided to conserve the piece because some of the missing pieces were found elsewhere in the museum. It was decided that these should be attached back to the object. The object was also in a definite need of cleaning. The aim was to make the object more stable and, since the object is part of the permanent exhibition at the mueum, to improve the appearance of the object.

The object was carefully vacuumed and cleaned with a very small amount of water and saliva. Luckily the old adhesived on the object swelled up readily in the presence of water and it was easy to remove them from the surface of the object mechanically.

The loose pieces were adhered back on to the object. A piece of perspex was placed inside th eleft arm of the cross to make the construction stabler. Perspex was chosen because the amber pieces are slightly translucent. The aim was to make the support as invicible as possible.
