JAPANNING

The picture below show the different stages of japanning. The box shown in the Wood section was also used in the process.

The box after the surface was sealed with a weak solution of rabbit skin glue.

Several layers f gesso were applied to build up a foundation and the even out the surface.

Multiple layers of shellac together with lamp black were applied.

A raised decoration was was made on top of the box after the shellac underneath was first sanded smooth.

A few areas of the decoration were oil gilded.

The decoration was painted on.

More details were added with every layer.

Finally the fine details were painted on.

The finished item after more shellac was added on top of the decoration.

The shellac on top of the decoration was sanded smooth and polished.
