PULL-ALONG TOY (1898)

The object has been put together using both manufactured and home made elements. The head of the doll and the donkey are mass-produced but the rest of the object has been put together by an unknown individual. The materials included papier maché, porcelain, wood, textiles and metal. The object is from the collection of Helsinki City Museum.

The object was going to be placed on display and needed cleaning and stabilization so that this could be done without further damage to the object.

The object had been in the storage for a long time and needed surface cleaning. The leg of the doll had broken from the anckle and the paint on the feet of the doll was flaking. The donkey was missing one ear and the other one had been nearly torn off.

The textiles were vacuumed and the hair of the doll (human hair wig) was cleaned using a mixture of deionised water and etanol. The leg of the doll was adhered using a PVA adhesive. The ear of the donkey was adhered back in place using two strips of Japanese tissue paper and a Methyl hydroxyl ethyl cellulose adhesive (Tylose MH 1000 P2). The same adhesive was used to consolidate the flaking paint on the dolls feet and some parts of the leather harnes on the donkey.

After conservation the object was stable and could be handled and displlayed without causing more damage to it.
